Impact

Some examples of what we have achieved so far:

  • Improvement of working and living conditions of 60,000 coffee producers (approx. 400,000 persons based on an average family size of 6.5 persons) over the past 10 years
  • Significant income improvements for farmers (for example, up to 250% in Uganda where earnings for a typical smallholder farmer with about 280 coffee trees increased from USD 200 to USD 500 per year within the scope of the Coffee Farmers Alliance Support Project)

  • Professional development of many farmer organisations in terms of transparency, improved service levels vis-a-vis farmers, resulting in better access of farmers to know-how, finance, marketing (e.g. ACTASA and ASILCOM in Alta Verapaz in Guatemala; AGROINDUSTRAL LA ESPERANZA in San Cristóbal in the Dominican Republic; CENFROCAFE and COICAFE in Cajamarca in Peru; FUNDECASSA in Intibucá in Honduras; UNCFA in Mubende and Mityana District in Uganda)
  • Increased environmental awareness and improved conservation practices of farmers and farmer organisations (e.g. introduction of soil protection measures in Uganda; biodiversity conservation through sustainable producion in Honduras; erosion control in El Salvador and Guatemala; watershed management in El Salvador; optimization of use of fertilizer and agrochemicals in  Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Kenya and Vietnam)
  • Optimized water usage in project regions (e.g. reduction of water consumption for coffee processing in Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Tanzania; reduction of water volumes for irrigation in Vietnam)
  • Establishment of renewable energy solutions in project areas (e.g. biogas from the treatment of waste water from coffee processing in Vietnam; wood production, use of coffee husk and plastic tunnels for reducing the use of fossil fuels in coffee drying in Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia and Brazil)
  • Improved extension networks building upon well-trained lead farmers and agronomic technicians of farmer organisations working in coordination with staff and experts of existing local extension services (e.g. in Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam)
