Our work goes beyond coffee production. We support smallholder families to take a proactive role in shaping their lives in an informed and self-determined way. As a result, they are driving prosperous development of their livelihoods for themselves and their communities.

The core components of our livelihood approach include: Family Business, Farmer Organizations, Youth and Climate Change. Gender equality is a fundamental aspect of all four of these components and is mainstreamed across all our activities.

Our 5X1 Diversification System in Central America helps smallholders diversify their agricultural production systems. 5 rows of coffee are grown for every row of the diversified crop such as plantain, avocado and lime.

This system promotes: crop distancing, management and agro-forestry.

If required, short-term crops such as beans, corn or manihot can also be grown between coffee rows to promote food security.

Commitment. At HRNS, almost everything builds upon commitment. Our teams are truly committed in supporting and making smallholder families prosper. Without any previews of what the new year was going to bring, we were all faced with a multifaceted stress test when COVID-19 hit the planet. In 2020, commitment became specifically important.

In our “2020 End of the Year Message”, our Managing Director, Michael Opitz, summarizes what this meant for HRNS. Read Now!

The fallout of these two back-to-back hurricanes in Honduras and Guatemala hit HRNS project regions and affected most of the smallholder families we works with. Read about our emergency response to support smallholder families below:

This is good work please keep it up

There’s no doubt that 2020 was a challenging year. It continues to be, particularly for smallholder farmers who are facing several battles on top of COVID-19.

As we approach the end of the year, we decided to switch our focus. Let’s instead, focus on the things that kept us hopeful and encourage us to move forward into a #NewYear!

Starting tomorrow, smallholder farmers across our project regions share their response! Stay tuned!
