Along with the millions of smallholder coffee farming families worldwide, Jose and Luiza Resende from Brazil, had to adapt and find new alternatives to reduce costs and harvest coffee when COVID-19 hit!

On top of strict movement restrictions, discontinued field trainings and lack of labor, the price of fertilizers and other inputs, became extremely high.

With the continuous support from HRNS’ regional team and International Coffee Partners, Jose and Luiza continued to receive online trainings.

Today, Jose and Luiza are making their own organic fertilizers that they apply in their farm and are testing new rust resistant varieties to reduce costs! 🌱🐛

As a result of HRNS’ interventions, smallholder families are operating their farms as family businesses. Take Misearch and Teddy from Uganda, as an example! Since joining the UCAT (Uganda Coffee Agronomy Training) Program in 2018, they have developed a joint vision, shared responsibilities and managed their farm proactively due to proper agronomic training.

As a result, Misearch and Teddy have:

- Applied more than 9 good agricultural practices in their farm.
- Increased their productivity by 50%.
- Increased their income by over 85%.
- Kept monthly records of expenses and profits.
- Created family budgets to keep finances in order.

Misearch’s and Teddy’s farm is currently being used to teach and encourage other smallholders families in their community!

Meet Ever Garza! A 24 year old smallholder farmer from Ocotepeque, Honduras. He is currently part of our Tim Hortons Coffee Partnership and is an active member of the youth committee established by the program! Among the different things he’s learned, implementing good agricultural practices has led to better yields and improved coffee quality during this year’s harvest!

Unfortunately, part of Ever’s farm was washed away due to the two hurricanes last November. However, thanks to the technical support and guidance received from the program, Ever is establishing a new diversification plot with coffee and avocado in the damaged area.

Increasing #genderequality not only empowers women, it empowers everyone! ✨💪

Throughout East Africa, patriarchal norms often limit the voice of women in the household. This affects their access to household resources and their say in household finances and decision-making.

Promoting a gender-conscious farming household allows for joint decision-making and planning, which not only benefits women, but the entire family. They ultimately profit from improved financial discussions and overall livelihood.

Our #genderhouseholdapproach in #Uganda, #tanzania and #Ethiopia, promotes coffee farming as a household enterprise. Joint goal-setting and joint decision-making, especially between spouses, are the two key components.

In total, more than 20,000 farming households have been reached!

In response to the lack of labor in Ocotepeque and Copán, Honduras and as a preventive measure to avoid large groups of people, we are supporting semi-mechanized coffee harvesting instead of hand picking! Our work goes beyond coffee production. We support smallholder families to take a proactive role in shaping their lives in an informed and self-determined way. As a result, they are driving prosperous development of their livelihoods for themselves and their communities.

The core components of our livelihood approach include: Family Business, Farmer Organizations, Youth and Climate Change. Gender equality is a fundamental aspect of all four of these components and is mainstreamed across all our activities.

Our 5X1 Diversification System in Central America helps smallholders diversify their agricultural production systems. 5 rows of coffee are grown for every row of the diversified crop such as plantain, avocado and lime.

This system promotes: crop distancing, management and agro-forestry.

If required, short-term crops such as beans, corn or manihot can also be grown between coffee rows to promote food security.
