Dr. Nina Smidt Takes Over as Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung (HRNS)

Michael R. Neumann has handed over his role as Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung (HRNS) to Dr. Nina Smidt, effective 1 October 2026. With this change at the helm of the Board of Trustees, the Foundation combines continuity in its mission with new impetus for the strategic development of its work in Germany and internationally.

Michael R. Neumann founded Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung together with his family in 2005 and has closely guided and shaped its development ever since. During this time, the Foundation expanded its project work and systematic support in Germany and internationally in line with its three objectives – youth, nature, and social conditions in countries of the Global South – strengthened its focus on impact, and further developed its role as a reliable partner working with numerous private and public organizations. By 2026, the Foundation had reached more than 350,000 families worldwide.

“Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung is based on unwavering values. Upholding these values and fulfilling the Foundation’s objectives both allow and require continuous and dynamic adaptation to a changing world. For me, entrepreneurship is also an important principle in nonprofit work,” says Michael R. Neumann. “After more than 20 years, the time has come for me to hand over the role of Chairperson of the Board of Trustees to the next generation. I do so with great confidence, because Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung stands on a strong foundation and is ready for its continued development.”

Dr. Nina Smidt, an internationally experienced foundation executive, will now take over as Chairperson of the Board of Trustees. She has many years of experience in the strategic development of nonprofit organizations and in international cooperation.

She brings extensive experience, an international perspective, and a deep understanding of the work of foundations. She has the full confidence of the founders, and I am very pleased to hand over the role of Chairperson to her,” Michael R. Neumann continues.

Since its establishment, Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung has been committed to sustainably improving the living conditions of people in coffee-growing regions. What began with initial projects to improve coffee production has developed into a holistic approach that today strengthens smallholder families and communities, promotes the protection of nature and the environment, and opens up new educational opportunities and prospects for young people. Together with international and local partners, the Foundation is active in seven countries of the Global South and in Germany. With an endowment of around EUR 150 million, it has established a strong foundation for its long-term work.

With the change in the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, the Foundation reaffirms its commitment to developing impact-oriented solutions to global challenges together with strong partners.
