Dr. Karen Hadem shares her journey into philanthropy, what inspired her to join HRNS, and her vision for the foundation’s future.

Tell us a little about your journey into philanthropy.

I have always been fascinated by the unique role philanthropy can play—how even with limited resources, it can unlock meaningful change in complex situations. I often think of it like acupuncture: when you identify the right points and apply the right stimulus, you can release blockages, open new pathways, and strengthen what is already there.

Throughout my career in international development and philanthropy, I have had the privilege to work alongside truly inspiring people, individuals and communities who are deeply committed to shaping their own futures. Those partnerships have shaped me profoundly. What continues to motivate me is the belief that lasting impact doesn’t come from quick solutions, but from trust, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose.

What inspired you to take on the role of Managing Director at HRNS?

What drew me to HRNS was the powerful combination of strong values, a clear philanthropic purpose, and a genuine commitment to evidence-based decision-making paired with a very practical, hands-on approach. I have always believed that meaningful change cannot be designed from a distance; you cannot create impact in the South while sitting behind a desk in the North.

HRNS stands out because of the trusted relationships it has built over many years. It brings together various funders, local organizations, communities, and experts in a way that feels both grounded and forward-looking. That ability to connect people around shared goals is incredibly inspiring to me.

At the same time, this moment of leadership transition represents an exciting inflection point for the organization. It offers a chance not only to build on what already works so well, but also to explore new directions. Being part of that journey - and helping shape the next chapter together with the team - is something I feel very motivated and grateful to do.

What role can HRNS play in helping communities thrive in the years ahead?

The challenges communities face today are increasingly interconnected; whether economic pressures, environmental change, or the need to create opportunities for younger generations. These are complex issues that require long-term commitment and thoughtful collaboration.

I believe HRNS can play a meaningful role by staying close to its core strengths: strong partnerships, deep trust, and a willingness to listen and learn. At the same time, there is an opportunity to explore new and innovative approaches. Technological advances, for example, open up entirely new ways to design and deliver interventions.

Together with Jens, our team, and our partners around the world, I hope we can continue building on what HRNS already does so well, while also embracing new ideas and perspectives. What gives me real confidence is the dedication and passion of everyone involved and the shared belief that sustainable, positive change is possible when we work together with care and intention.
